I like the following video because the presenter lays it out the same way I would. Your objective should be to get a job as soon as possible and being a “software developer” might not be the fastest way.
There is a ton of demand for people with database skills.
If I were just starting out, I would focus on databases and tools (SQL, Tableau): data analysis is huge. Get a job, get some skills, have your employer pay for additional training. It’s a win-win-win.

But it is a great way to get started as a freelancer – and build up your skills in many areas. You will have to create proposals, communicate with people around the world, set and manage expectations, and complete the work.

Make connections, get work — just like in the real world (I’ve had much more luck on Twitter than I have on LinkedIn).
Friends and Family
You know somebody that knows somebody. Use your connections.
